Last week, Equity Union Real Estate unveiled a healthcare initiative, partnering with Trident BPO to offer affiliated agents and their families group health coverage, including a nationwide PPO network, addressing a critical need for independent real estate professionals, the company said.
Agents Gain New Healthcare Pathway
The initiative expands Equity Union’s agent support offerings into a long-standing challenge for independent real estate professionals: finding affordable, flexible health coverage outside traditional employer-sponsored benefits.
According to the National Association of Realtors’ 2025 Profile of Real Estate Firms, 81% of real estate firms reported that health insurance is not offered to independent contractors, licensees or agents. Most agents operate as independent contractors, making them responsible for securing their own coverage or relying on a spouse’s plan.
Equity Union’s program aims to connect affiliated agents with group-level healthcare options typically unavailable through standard independent-contractor brokerage models. “Our agents’ success is about more than production. It is about the businesses they build and the lives those businesses support,” said Harma Hartouni, CEO of Equity Union Real Estate.
“Real estate professionals are independent business owners, and healthcare is something many are left to handle entirely on their own. We wanted to provide our agents with another option—one that gives them access to meaningful healthcare choices for themselves and their families while reinforcing that Equity Union is invested in much more than their next transaction.”
For independent agents often relying on the individual insurance marketplace, association plans, or partner employer coverage, the program creates another pathway to evaluate health coverage tied directly to brokerage affiliation.
Broader Strategy Amid Growth
Introducing this healthcare offering coincides with Equity Union’s expansion across California and Nevada. The independent brokerage handled 5,670 transaction sides in 2025, showing a 239% increase in transaction-side growth from 2021 to 2025. This strong performance ranked the firm No. 1 on the 2026 RealTrends Verified GameChangers list of the fastest-growing brokerages in the country by five-year transaction-side percentage growth.
Equity Union positions the healthcare initiative alongside investments in technology, marketing, leadership access, office infrastructure, and operational support as part of an “agent-first” brokerage model focused on long-term scalability and sustainability of agents’ businesses.
Competing brokerages have increasingly looked beyond traditional splits, caps, and technology packages to attract and retain agents. Health benefits have historically been a gap in the residential brokerage value proposition, particularly for firms built on an independent-contractor model.
For agents, the program could reduce time spent evaluating the individual marketplace, improve access to multi-state provider networks for frequent travelers, and potentially lower total costs if group-style arrangements prove more favorable than current coverage. Broker-owners and team leaders see benefits and support services becoming key differentiators in recruiting and retention as competition for productive agents intensifies.
Equity Union’s healthcare initiative illustrates how larger independents are experimenting with benefit-style programs that address major quality-of-life and financial planning needs without converting agents to full-time employees.
